Chromite is a mineral that contains chromium, iron, and oxygen, with varying amounts of magnesium and aluminum, and has a high specific density. Its chemical formula is (Fe,Mg)O*(Cr,Fe,Al)2O3, and commonly found in the Bushveld Complex in South Africa.
Plomp Mineral Services supplies chemical grade LG6 chromite from the Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine in South Africa, known for its low silica content.
Our chemical grade chromite ore or concentrate is dark gray to black with a slight metallic appearance, and sized between 0 – 1 mm.
Chemical grade chromite is not only used in the chemical industry, but also as refractory material in the steel industry.
Chemical grade chromite users transform this mineral into various chemicals like sodium dichromate, chrome acid, chrome oxide, and potassium dichromate. These are subsequently used in leather tanning, refractories, pigments, wood preservation, the production of chrome metal, and chrome plating. Chrome used in hard chrome plating is specifically for protecting steel in high wear, high temperatures and corrosive environments. Meanwhile, decorative chrome plating is primarily for its beautiful shiny appearance.
As refractory material, chemical grade is also used as filler sand in ladles in the steel industry.
Plomp Mineral Services’ LG6 chemical grade chromite has a very low silica content and meets the following general specification:
– Chemical: Cr2O3 minimum 46 %, typical 46.7 %
– Chemical: SiO2 maximum 1 %, typical 0.5%
– Physical sizing: 0 – 1 mm
Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) are available upon request.

As a naturally occurring substance and not chemically modified, chromite is therefore exempt from REACH registration. The international Harmonized System Code or HS Code of chrome ore is 2610.00, and the European GN code is 2610.0000.
We supply our chemical grade chromite in bulk and big bags and can deliver by truck, container, rail, barge and ship from our stocks. In addition to chemical grade we also offer Foundry Grade Chromite Sand and Metallurgical Grade Chromite sand.
