Chrome ore is a mineral that contains chromium, iron, and oxygen, with varying amounts of magnesium and aluminum, and has a high specific density. Its chemical formula is (Fe,Mg)O*(Cr,Fe,Al)2O3. This ore, which is also referred to as chromite, is commonly found in the Bushveld Complex in South Africa.
Plomp Mineral Services supplies LG6 metallurgical grade chromite coming form the Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine in South Africa. This ore is dark gray to black with a slight metallic appearance, and is available in the sizes: lumpy (10 – 150 mm), chips (0 – 10 mm) and in sub-angular sand or concentrate (0 – 1 mm).
This type of chromite is mainly used as a base material for the production of ferrochrome, essential in the stainless steel industry. Steel production, especially the production of stainless steel with a chromium content of 10 to 20%, is the largest consumer of ferrochrome. More than 80% of the world’s ferrochrome ends up in stainless steel.
Additionally, milled metallurgical grade chromite applications are in the brake-line industry.
Furthermore milled metallurgical grade usage is as pigment in container glass. Adding milled chromite to glass manufacturing colors the glass green.
At Plomp Mineral Services, we supply LG6 metallurgical grade chromite with a focus on consumers in the container glass industry.
Basically the general specification is as follows:
– Chemical: Cr2O3 ranging from 40 to 45 %
– Chemical: SiO2 ranging from 3 % to 6 %
– Physical sizing: 0 – 1 mm concentrate
Technical Data Sheets (TDS) and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available upon request.
As a naturally occurring substance and not chemically modified, chromite is therefore exempt from REACH registration. The international Harmonized System Code or HS Code of chrome ore is 2610.00, and the European GN code is 2610.0000.
We supply our metallurgical grade chrome ore in bulk and can deliver by truck, container and ship from our stocks. In addition to metallurgical grade, we also offer Foundry Grade Chromite Sand and Chemical Grade Chromite.
