Chromite is a mineral that contains chromium, iron, and oxygen, with varying amounts of magnesium and aluminum, and has a high specific density. Its chemical formula is (Fe,Mg)O*(Cr,Fe,Al)2O3. Particularly chrome ores, out of which foundry grade chromite sand can be made, are only found in the Bushveld Complex in South Africa.
Chromite sand is usually dark gray to black with a slight metallic appearance.
Plomp Mineral Services supplies high-quality LG6 foundry grade chromite sand that originates from the Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine in South Africa. Our foundry grade chromite sand is specially sized and highly dedusted for the various applications that we supply.
Foundry grade chromite sand is widely used in various industries, including foundry, steel, and refractory. Its unique properties such as: high melting point, thermal shock resistance and low thermal expansion make it straightaway the best casting sand and core sand for iron and steel foundries. Secondly, it works well in ladle filler sands (also called filler sand or sliding gate mix or plugging sand) to prevent molten steel from contacting the mechanism that controls the opening system of sliding gate of the ladle.
Additionally, it is suitable for use in refractories such as chrome-magnesite and chrome-corundum bricks.
Plomp Mineral Services’ LG6 foundry grade chromite sand has superior qualities and meets the following general specification:
– Chemical: Cr2O3 minimum 46.0 % | SiO2 maximum 1.0 % | CaO maximum 0.3 %
– Sizes: AFS 45 – 55 and AFS 40 – 50, with ultra-low fines and no dust
– Close to neutral pH values and low acid demand values
– High refractoriness, good thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance and low thermal expansion
Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) are available upon request.
As a naturally occurring substance and not chemically modified, chromite is therefore exempt from REACH registration. The international Harmonized System Code or HS Code of chrome ore is 2610.00, and the European GN code is 2610.0000
We supply our chromite sand in bulk, paper bags and big bags and can deliver by truck, container, rail, barge and ship from our stocks. In addition to foundry grade, we also offer Chemical Grade Chromite and Metallurgical Grade Chromite.
