Silica, also known as silicon dioxide, is a group of minerals composed of silicon and oxygen. It occurs in nature in various crystalline forms, with quartz being the most common. As a naturally occurring substance, it has been known since ancient times and is widely available on Earth.
For a material to be considered silica, it must have a minimum of 95% SiO2 and a maximum of 0.6% Fe2O3. It is a hard, chemically inert mineral with a high melting point, and its color varies based on the minerals present in the deposit.
Silica (siliciumdioxide) sand grains are sub-angular to rounded-off and have an off-white color.
It is important to realize that silica is an indispensable mineral in the production of thousands of products in our daily lives. The suitability of this mineral depends on its physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, such as shape, color, size distribution, and strength for each application.
The applications of silica (siliciumdioxide) include industries such as glass, pigment, ceramics, construction, foundry, plastics, oil drilling, abrasives and chemicals.
At Plomp Mineral Services, we specialize in supplying customized sizes of silica sands and flours, with a focus on the oil drilling industry. For this application, we not only crush and sieve silica sand, but also mill and micronize according to customer requirements.
Basically the general specifications are as follows:
– Chemical: SiO2 minimum 99.8 % | Fe2O3 maximum 0.1%
– Hardness typical 7 %
– pH value typical 7
– Various sizings: 0 – 300 micron, 0 – 75 micron, 0 – 10 micron (as per customer’s request)
Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) are available upon request.

As a naturally occurring substance and not chemically modified, silica (siliciumdioxide or quartzsand) is exempt from REACH registration. The international Harmonized System Code or HS Code of silica is 2505.10, the European GN code is 2505.1000.
We supply our silica in bulk, paper bags and big bags and can deliver by truck, container, rail, barge and ship from our stocks.
