Iron ores are usually found in the form of magnetite (Fe3O4), hematite (Fe2O3), goethite, limonite or siderite and are rich in iron oxides and have a high specific density.The colour of iron oxides vary from dark grey, bright yellow, deep purple to rusty red.
Magnetite is an iron ore mineral with a density of 4,800-5,100 kg/m3 and permanent magnetism as long as its chemical structure is maintained and that is due to ferrimagnetism. Magnetite is a metallic black mineral that contains iron in two oxidation states, ferric (Fe3+) and ferrous (Fe2+), which is unique amongst the oxides of iron.
Applications and markets
Due to its high iron content, Magnetite is the primary source of iron. It is treated in a blast furnace to produce sponge or pig iron, both to be used in the large-scale manufacture of steel.
Much smaller amounts of magnetite are used in the chemical, magnet, foundry, construction, balast and heavy media separation industry.
