Cenospheres or Microspheres

 

Description

Cenospheres are formed in coal fired power stations. After burning of the coal, the resulting pulverized fuel ash (PFA) is removed in the form of a slurry into lagoons, where most of the ash particles settle out. Only a very small portion floats to the surface and these particles are minute hollow spheres known as cenospheres or microspheres.
A cenosphere is a light weight, inert, hollow sphere made largely of silica and alumina and has a typical size between 5 and 500 microns. Its colour varies from grey to almost white.

 

Applications and markets

The main benefits of cenospheres are: reduction of weight, shrinkage, viscosity and an increase of  fireproofing, sound dampening and refractoriness. Its applications are for example:

    • in lightweight insulating (refractory) products
    • in paints, lacquers, coatings, plastics and adhesives
    • in light weight aggregates like special concretes

 

Specifications

Plomp Mineral Services is able to supply microspheres based on specific gravity, size distribution, colour, chemistry, or a combination of these criteria to meet your specific needs.
Various grades of white and/or off-white microspheres can be offered with the below typical specification:

    • Chemical:  Al2O3  typical 30 – 40 %  |  SiO2  typical 50 – 60 %
    • Various Sizings:  0 – 90 micron | 0 –  200 micron | 0 –  300 micron
    • Various Specific density:  ranging from 0.6 to 0.9 g/cm3
    • Various Colour:  from white to off-white to light grey

Supply

We supply our Cenospheres in paper bags and big bags and can deliver by truck, container and rail from our stocks.
